The struggle of women for gender equality in all spheres of society and the economy, which includes areas as varied as civic participation, education or employment, remains a necessity today. Thus, the pursuit of this objective emerges as one of the 17 United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, although it also integrates all dimensions of freedom and inclusive and sustainable development.
In this context, the basic principles of the cooperative model, such as free adhesion, equity, solidarity, participatory decision-making and common ownership, can play a fundamental role in expanding opportunities for gender equality.
In this sense, CASES – Cooperative António Sérgio for Social Economy publishes a study prepared on the occasion of International Women’s Day 2021 that aims to highlight the role that thousands of women play in the Portuguese Cooperative Sector, considering in particular three spheres of female participation: in the cooperative movement; in leadership; and in employment.
